Good waste management is needed to reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, improve the circular economy and achieve sustainable development.

What is Waste Management?
Waste management is the collection, sorting, transportation, treatment, recycling, recovery and scientific disposal of waste in a way that protects human health and minimizes environmental pollution. It addresses the complete life cycle of waste from generation to final disposal and seeks to minimize the adverse effects of waste on air, water, soil and public health.

The modern approach to waste management is based on what is called the waste hierarchy. This is a preference order for dealing with waste. The order is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recovery and Disposal. This is designed to encourage the conservation of resources and to reduce the reliance on landfills. It includes the management of various waste streams such as municipal solid waste, plastic waste, biomedical waste, hazardous waste, electronic waste (e-waste), construction and demolition waste, and industrial waste. Each waste stream requires specific treatment and disposal methods.
